Popis

The exhibition The Red Century. A Century of the history of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia took place in Kampa park from May 14 to August 1, 2021. The Exhibition presented milestones and turning points in the history of a party which has greatly influenced the lives of several generations of Czechoslovakia citizens. The Communist Party of Czechoslovakia was founded exactly one hundred years ago, in May 1921. Its existence was closely linked to the Soviet model, which it often followed blindly. It took power in 1948 and maintained it for the next four decades (from August 1968, with the help of the occupying forces). Over time, approximately six million people were members of this political party. Through text and period photographs and posters, the publication briefly recalls the circumstances of the founding of the Communist Party, the Bolshevization, the period of occupation and illegality, the infiltration of state structures at the end of the second world war and shortly afterwards, the seizure of power, the show trials, and the period of socialism with human face, the consolidation during the period of normalization and the subsequent uncertainty about what to expect from Soviet perestroika, and the recent past of a party that has neither renounced communism in its name nor accepted any real responsibility for the crimes of the past and, through the words of some of its members, continues to defend even the most flagrant violations of the law in the 1950s. We also remember those who did not hesitate to stand up against communism. We want to not only to describe both the roots and tragic consequences of the communist regime, which in many ways are still felt today, but also to learn to recognize the causes and context of the events that led to a lack of freedom for decades.
